Elijah at Passover

Did families in Elijah’s time hike to Jerusalem for the holidays?

Thank you, Sharon Gunneson Magoon.

I wondered if families who worshiped the Lord might have ignored Jeroboam’s new religion and hiked to Jerusalem for Passover, Shavuot or Sukkot.

(You remember how Jeroboam started his Golden Calf religion to keep people from visiting Jerusalem, right? — 1 Kings 12:25ff)

Sharon showed me 2 Chronicles 11:14. “…Levites even abandoned their pasturelands and property and came to Judah and Jerusalem.”

Exactly what I needed to know.

  1. Elijah’s family struggled against Moloch and Asherah. So, they might have traveled to Jerusalem for the holidays.
  2. Plus, I feel a little more confident about putting these words in the mouth of Hashabiah, the Levite in Zarephath. “…we still go home for the three holidays.”

Thank you, Sharon!
