This is a great site for illustrations of the specific pottery you were asking for. Apparently somewhere during this period a second material and a higher firing technique were developed that produced a harder, less porous surface. I didn’t get into this, just saw it mentioned and think you can see it in some of the clay pots that are shinier looking.
